Definition of Conflict
The word "conflict" as it relates to its use of the term "conflict resolution" is defined as the effect of contradictory ideas or thoughts that cause the opposing individuals to express their displeasure or antagonism either explicitly or implicitly.
The Necessity of Conflict Resolution in the Workplace
Conflicts are a part of everyday life. People will not always agree with each other in personal or business relationships. This is a given fact of life. Unless you are completely isolated from human interaction, there will be occasion in your daily activities where you may run into people who are not very easy to interact with.
Therefore it becomes valuable to develop proven skills at dealing with difficult people and/or situations - in essence resolving the conflict as it arises.
Some people may think it is better to ignore the signs of a rising conflict but this will often result in the problem developing into something worse. Avoiding a situation that incites negative feelings in a person will tend to cause the problem to take root - either consciously or sub-consciously. Many battles throughout history could have been avoided by applying the simple tools of Conflict Resolution to the equation.
There are numerous personalities from various backgrounds that are "forced" to interact with each other by one common denominator - the company they work for. In today's workplace, with the pace of technology, the extra-long working hours and the number of factors that exacerbate stress levels, having to deal with conflicts is not something that anyone will realistically look forward to facing.
The idea therefore is to have the right tools to recognize the emergence of the issue that could give rise to the conflict. In recognizing the potential for conflict or addressing it at the onset using NON-CONFRONTATIONAL methods, an amicable resolution is more likely to be reached. The result is a better understanding and more comprehensive relationship between colleagues thereby increasing the likelihood for an improved productive team environment.
